Apple pie
This recipe is for apple pie. I found a recipe for apple pie on the net, and I experimented with it to make my own, along with using a few of my grandma's tips i've learned over the years. It is my dad's birthday, and he loves my grandma' apple pie, so I figured I would give this a shot.
Crust:
2 cups flour
1 cup shortening
1/8 tsp. salt
1/4c -1/2c water
Combine salt and flour thoroughly. Cut shortening into flour and salt mixture with a fork or pastry cutter.
Add water until you have a soft but firm pie dough to work with. The pie crust should be soft and a bit damp to the touch. Make sure you start with as little water as you can first, and add as you go.
Apple Pie Filling
About 7 large red delicious apples
1/2-1 cup of sugar (depending on taste, start with 1/2 cup first and increase if need be.
2 tbsp. flour
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
1tbs. lemon juice
3 tbsp butter
Peel, core, and cut the apples into thin slices. Sprinkle apple slices with lemon juice.
Mix dry ingredients together.
Mix the apples sprinkled in lemon juice and butter to the dry ingredients.
I like my apples soft in applie pie, so once I had this mixture done I put it in the microwave for about 5 minutes, this helps soften them up.
Putting the Apple Pie together
Pinch pie dough in half.
Roll out each half to fit an 8-inch or 9-inch pie plate on a floured hard surface.
Place one pie crust into the bottom of the pie plate. Make sure the bottom lays flat to the surface of the pie plate.
Pour apple pie filling into pie crust. Place the top pie crust onto the pie plate and filling. Crimp the edges together with your fingers or a fork. Cut vent slits into the top of the apple pie crust if you want to cover the top, I however, used a lattice top. Sprinkle apple pie with cinnamon sugar mixture which consists of 1/4 cup sugar with about 1 tbsp cinnamon.
Now once you have that done, I took 1 beaten egg(no need to use it all, just make sure the top of the pie is covered) and brushed it all over the top, which helps keep the crust from burning and it gives it a nice crispyness.
Preheat oven to 350, and once preheated, bake the pie for about 25-35 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on it. The pie is done when all the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown.
